First time in the salon…

Walking into Daniel Granger’s salon for the first time, I was struck by the mix of styles and images presented by the various stylists. Wow! So often stylists look the same. This means a welcome for diverse customers, too. Hey, even scruffy me will fit in here! I liked the friendliness and the funky style, and readers, let me tell you that the massaging chairs by the basins are to die for! Hair wash and back massage all in one!

Trusting Daniel…

But of course, it’s the hair care that created a devotee out of me. Daniel, the owner, asked me what I wanted and I invited him to do his own thing but I didn’t want it too neat, nor a recognisable, familiar style. I learned that Daniel cuts and styles according to what he knows about me. At first, he gave me funky but careful, and I was transformed and thrilled. Watching him cut is fascinating for his attention to tiny details, twisting wee strands to cut, and snipping against the flow somehow. These magic cuts mean that blow drying isn’t an anxiety or burden since my hair keeps its shape.

Braving the bleach…

As we got to know each other, Daniel sensed I wouldn’t balk at a bit more drama. My little head of thin hair morphed into a lively, edgy creation. Then the day came when I was considering different highlights and asked Daniel’s view. He smiled and suggested forgetting those highlights and going the whole hog: a complete head bleach! OMG! I’d never have thought it in a million years. Friends, I’d turned 60!

Hair is my makeup…

During the pandemic I decided to stop wearing makeup. When the world was closed and there was nowhere to go it was easy. I felt a real sense of liberation at not having to wipe gunk off my face at the end of day. However, as the world opened, I was going to places where I thought people would expect me to wear at least mascara and eye liner. But with this new shorter, wacky aluminium ‘do’, I don’t worry about makeup. I feel great, I feel comfortable and I’d go so far as to say I’ve never before enjoyed my hair. It actually makes me smile!

My hair style won’t be everyone’s dream, of course, but what matters is having confidence in a salon to work out what style suits your personality, taste, and what will enhance the hair on your head.
